Why Healing Now?

At the end of Jeremiah 30, the chapter where God Himself promises to heal the otherwise incurable pain of His people, the Lord says, “In the latter days you will understand this.” Which begs this question: why is healing our pain an essential end time ministry?

The answer first came to me some years ago when I realized that where sin abounds, pain abounds. There’s no such thing as a sin that doesn’t hurt anyone. Sin at least hurts the sinner, in obvious and often subtle ways. A brilliant statement I read in seminary came from Scottish theologian James Stewart who said, “God loves broken sinners but he hates the sin that broke them”. He also said, “God is not against us for our sin, but for us, against our sin.” If nothing else, when left untreated, the spiritually fatal disease called sin eventually erodes our ability to experience God’s love and share it with others.

Fortunately, there is great good news for us at the end of time, an era the Bible calls perilous times. But first it warns us that “men will become lovers of themselves, and money, and pleasure instead of lovers of God.” They will be “arrogant, unloving, unforgiving, brutal, and void of self-control.” They will even “despise good.” Just look at events like the Columbine and Virginia Tech massacres, or the malicious beatings of teens on You Tube. Consider the children and young women being raped, used in pornography and abused in unprecedented numbers, or the domestic violence, street gangs, drug wars and abortions committed since the Supreme Court legalized it. What about the popularization of atheism we see in books today? Will such people even appear godly (spiritual but not religious), but “deny the power of God” (religious but spiritually impotent?). Does that sound like our world to you? And given the power of such lust, vicious animosity and greed, how can people not be hurt and hurt others?

I’m convinced that this is why healing pain is such an essential end time ministry. If God didn’t heal our pain, we would all be too crippled to love and the tremendous good news of His kingdom could never be taken to the entire earth.

Recently I met with some Christian counselors from huge churches in southern California – good, dedicated, competent people who have given themselves to helping God’s people with their issues. Some specialized in saving marriages, others in reaching marines and soldiers, still others with outreaches to inmates and the omnipresent homeless who dot our street corners. One church had 16 professional counselors on staff. All were deeply moved by the seemingly unending stream of heartbreak, struggle and pain they witnessed in their daily practices; sad legacies of abuse, neglect, and unrestrained passions that rule so many in our post modern world; a world where many people had no time for the God of the Bible, the Prince of peace, the loving Lord who “heals all our diseases.”

The psychic suffering that surrounds us all is enough to make any sensitive person weep. It’s too much for many people to bear, but thankfully, it’s not too much for our God. This is why Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed One, sent to bind up our wounds, heal our brokenness and free us from our slavery to self-destruction.

I think it will soon become obvious to more and more pastors and counselors that unless God’s people are trained and deployed to heal the hurting world in which we live, no number of counselors and pastoral staff will be sufficient to the task. Only God can do it. But just as it was when He sent Jesus in the flesh to heal us and show us the way to eternal life, so now He chooses to use human instruments as vessels for His end time healing work. And what a wonderful work it is. I believe more and more churches will discover that the only way to heal the pain of God’s people is to train and deploy the healing gifts that reside in the laity, freeing the counselors for the most complicated, urgent pressing needs.

We hope to offer seminars and retreats in Southern California and Cleveland this year to do exactly that. I pray that you can attend one. Healing doesn’t cost, it pays. Ask yourself this: what toll will it take on you and the people and things most important to you if you don’t find the healing you need?

“Many of God’s dear children have the mistaken idea that the day of miracles is past and that the Lord Jesus no longer heals the sick. They have honestly believed and even preached that these things were only for Bible days and that Christ has now withdrawn his power. … But there is not one verse in the dear old Bible to substantiate such a teaching. … Jesus left explicit instructions for his disciples and followers that they too were to declare the good news of healing for the body as they preached the gospel.” – Aimee Semple McPherson

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.” – Mark 16:15-18, 20, NIV

(It’s important that you read all the way down to the last sentence.)

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper.  His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.  Over the next   few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down.  He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.  He said, 'You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence.  The fence will never be the same.  When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one.  You can put a knife in a man and draw it out.  But It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound will still be there.  A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Remember that friends are very rare jewels, indeed.  They make you smile and encourage you to succeed.  They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us.'
