How to Have a Happier New Year

This is the time when people love to diet, get organized, break bad habits and embrace new ones -- at least for a few days.

I've decided to forgo all such promises in lieu of one I think is even more promising -- one that can be a far greater blessing than anything money or looking better or doing better can offer. It's based on a tiny verse from my favorite chapter in the Bible, First Corinthians 13. I keep this scripture pasted to my monitor but I still forget it all too often. It simply says, "Love Never Fails."

This year, instead of reacting when I feel threatened, hurt, misunderstood or unappreciated, I will try very hard to respond instead of react, and I will do my best to make that response one that is empowered by love.

When I look back, most of my suffering comes from the PIT - Personally Induced Turbulence. When tempted to get all stirred up, I shall remember this: Love Never Fails.

No one can hurt us like our friends and loved ones. They hurt us when they take us for granted, misunderstand our motives, neglect us, and sometimes even speak ill of us. When that happens I will try to remember that Love Never Fails.

I repeatedly hurt myself by expecting people to honor their word. How easily I forget the times I have let someone down by saying something and not following through. When that happens I will try and remember: Love Never Fails.

In fact, most of my greatest failures in life have come from withholding love. When I get tired of failing and yearn to see success, I will strive to remember that Love Never Fails.

I'm convinced that this simple three word passage contains the key to most of the things that will truly make me happier this year. Hopefully, in 2006, I can remember it.
