Want Your Life to get Better?

The Bible is all about transformed lives, and I don’t just mean conversion. The rebirth is amazing and the most powerful change any person will ever experience, but that’s not the end. Rather it’s the beginning of a perpetual transformation – a life that continues improving until you die. Sadly, most people never get what they need to keep growing. Few want God’s perfect will above all else. Many – perhaps most - get bogged down in guilt, self-hatred and condemnation.

Why is ongoing transformation necessary? Even after we’re reborn, our mind remains polluted with doubt, resentment, bitterness, mistrust and a plethora of other issues that keep us from being able to love as we ought. As a dear sister said to me this week, “I’m my own worst critic and enemy.” We all are, until we learn the secret of perpetual transformation.

In Romans 12, the apostle Paul tells us the key to having a life that keeps getting better. We’re to be transformed by renewing our minds, and when we do that we will prove how good God’s will is.

This ongoing mind renewal is what I call rethreading your head. How do we do that? It’s as simple as finding mental strongholds that keep your mind imprisoned and letting God’s potent Word tear them down from the inside out. How? By meditating on scriptures that expose Satan’s lies and supplanting them with divine Truth.

Until I began to do that I was plagued by doubt caused by personal guilt and condemnation. I was getting nowhere fast and blaming God for my inertia. I couldn’t believe the Lord would bless the likes of me because I was too messed up. I’d heard all the perfectionistic sermons about God not blessing us if there’s sin in our lives and I bought it, hook line and sinker – and it was sinking me! I was living on the edge of poverty, taking in roommates to make ends meet – roommates that were often dangerous and usually unpleasant to live with – and generally miserable with all my incredible ‘potential’ that never materialized. I lived at a subsistence level of existence financially, emotionally and spiritually. Do you know anyone like that?

As I meditated daily on the scripture that God “delights in the prosperity of His servants” I realized it doesn’t say He delights in the prosperity of those who are perfect. None of us are flawless. – not one! I slowly realized I AM His servant, therefore He takes pleasure in my success and well-being. My faith began to rise. Instead of listening to Satan, my accuser, I began to listen to God’s Word which says that as I learn wisdom, I find riches, and honor, and things that are better than anything money can buy. I reflected on Solomon who wrote much of the wisdom literature in the Bible, and realized how flawed he was. Even he couldn’t perfectly obey all the mandates of the wisdom he described, yet because he sought wisdom, he became the wealthiest man in the world and God used him mightily in ways from which we all benefit today. I thought maybe - just maybe - He can similarly use me!

And He is. I now live in a beautiful little apartment that I dearly love, with a fireplace, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, tennis courts and gym – and – no roommates. And I stand on the brink of getting my first real salary in many years, along with a new position and stock that stands to make me a wealthy man in a few years. Better yet it’s a role that uses my best skills and training in a venture that will impact millions of lives. Surely God’s will is wonderful, but I couldn’t prove that until I believed it and I couldn’t believe it until I renewed my mind with His Truth.

God’s Word is pregnant with awesome promises, and they are all true and can come true for you if you let them renew your mind. Try it, I guarantee you’ll love it. And if you don’t, you can get double your sin, doubt, condemnation, self hatred and bitterness back any time you want – and the ugly life that goes along with it. How’s that for a deal?
