The Secret to Answered Prayer

Wouldn’t you love to be more effective in prayer? Me too, and I know others feel that way. The variety of people’s prayer life never ceases to amaze me. Some refuse to ask God for anything for themselves. Others only ask for themselves and are angry because He seldom indulges their pleadings. Most are somewhere in between. It seems that everyone’s unique take on prayer is shaped more by how they perceive God than by how God tells us He is. His Word has great counsel for us on how to communicate more effectively with Him. Here are some wonderful things I’ve been learning lately about prayer.

This year I’ve sought to increase my faith so I can better believe the Lord for accomplishing the things I feel called to do. To that end, I’ve been mediating on a scripture that has helped me a ton. It’s John 15:7 - “If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” As I’ve tried to meditate on that passage each morning and night, my prayer life is changing and I’ve gotten blessed answers for many good things, big and small.

When I take my (almost) daily walk, I often find myself affirming, “I do abide in You, and Your word abides in me, and as I seek to obey your laws of love, You grant me my requests.” It’s really working. Just yesterday I prayed that someone who owed me some money would pay me soon without my needing to request it. The check came today. Earlier this year I asked God for PR help with my new book. A world class PR guy is taking me on for a share of profits because I can’t afford him otherwise.

The secret? It's as simple as just taking God at His word. If He says something and I believe it, that settles it. Earlier this year I had a sinus infection I couldn’t shake. A guest preacher led us in prayer for healing and encouraged us to just believe that God answered even if we didn’t feel differently. On the way home, my symptoms suddenly disappeared.

One of the greatest things we can do to grow spiritually is improve our prayer life. I’ll be the first to tell you I don’t spend hours in prayer every day. Fortunately God doesn’t require that. He just wants us in touch with Him as much as we want to be. And as any good father would, he delights in giving us the good things we need and desire. Simply take God at His word, change your prayer life and you will change your life. I’m living proof.
