Your Heroic Healing Journey

I had a recent talk with a new friend about the fact that healing is a heroic lifelong journey. (Jesus begins a good work in us when we give Him our life and he promises to continue that good work until we die.) She saw this as bad news, no doubt envisioning endless gruesome encounters with harsh people and tough circumstances. I explained it was just the opposite, that the healthier I had become, the easier life got. I’m sure this is why the path of the righteous grows brighter and brighter the longer we live.

I heard wonderful sermon years ago by Bob Mumford in which he pointed out that in the natural world life begins easy and gets rougher, while in the spiritual world the opposite is true. A new baby needs only to fuss and its every need is met. Then children keep yearning to get older so they can have more privileges. Then they turn 21, when there are no more privileges to be granted and it’s all downhill from there. For Christians however, our new life in Christ usually starts out to be painfully difficult as we discover how incompatible we are with God. As Mumford says, “God told me my ways are higher than yours … but they shouldn’t be!”

As a new Christian I remember fantasizing that if I could just be surrounded by Christians life would be easier. Indeed, be careful what you pray for! In my next job I lived in an inner city Christian community with other new Christians. Rubbing against each other became so painful I finally put a sign on my door that said, “Caution, Christians under construction, beware of falling conviction.”

To be sure, over 35 years later, bad circumstances and difficult people still intersect my life. The Bible warns us that our dark days will be many. But the more healing I have received, the better I deal with such things and the less they harm me.

Properly handled our problems actually make us better. When I see my crises in the best way possible I remember that each one has within it the seeds of an equal or greater benefit. I’m learning sooner and sooner in tough situations to look for the silver linings in life’s inevitable clouds. I’m also learning that those clouds bring needed rain; that dung happens, but the Lord uses it to fertilize fruit and flowers to enrich and beautify my life.

Nothing has done more for me to accelerate my own spiritual growth towards wholeness and Christ-likeness than the investments I’ve made in spiritual healing and nothing has made my life easier, better or more blessed. Whether my growth comes through individual work with a skilled teacher or therapist or attending a retreat or seminar, I am more convinced than ever that healing doesn’t cost it pays. The sooner you invest in your life, health, happiness and well being, the sooner you’ll be glad you did. The better I get, the better life gets, and I just can’t put a price on that.
