A Primer on Prosperity

I keep hearing of Christian friends struggling with money. I understand. Little is taught on it, and much that we already believe is wrong. Our silence on money has cost us much, limiting the money the Church needs and forcing it to use gambling parties and awkward pledge drives to raise needed income. But it also keeps Christians from reaping the awesome benefits of scriptural prosperity.

It all starts with tithing – giving your first ten percent to God, which is only reasonable. If I gave you $1,000 conditioned on you giving me back $100 would you say no? Better yet, this is the only area where God encourages us to test Him. He promises to pour out overflowing abundance if we pay our tithes. If we don’t, we rob Him, allowing Satan to rob us. Simple, no? I know this: when I forget to pay my tithes, all kinds of expensive things go wrong. When I again begin tithing, the plunder stops; and somehow I always have more than enough. I’ve never met a confirmed tither who wasn’t glad he did so. Conversely, I’ve seen many others who say they can’t afford to tithe. Most of them will never experience the abundance that God promises to those who honor Him first with their increase. If you think you can’t afford to tithe, you really can’t afford not to. You truly cannot out give God. Sadly, only three percent of Christians tithe. No wonder so many struggle financially.

Tithes are Kingdom taxes; they support those who feed us spiritually. This allows teachers to proclaim ‘the meat of righteousness’. Ministries that must be careful not to offend anyone for fear they will withhold their giving are tempted to compromise their message. They seldom get beyond spiritual pabulum and milk.

In addition to tithes, Christians are commanded to give offerings to support ministries we believe in and we are challenged to give alms to the needy, as we are moved to do so. Tithes should never be used as alms or offerings. When you do, you rob God and Satan can rob you.

If we live as if everything we have belongs to God, He will provide for us supernaturally and our faith will grow in ways it couldn’t otherwise. If we don’t, we may never know the material abundance He wants for us. If you don’t believe me, either start or stop tithing and let me know what happens.

 Scripture of the Week

“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed me. But you say, In what way have we robbed you? In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be food in My house, and prove me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you such a blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the Lord of hosts; “And all nations shall call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land,” says the Lord of hosts. – Malachi 4:8-12
