It's YOUR Wonderful Life

If any one had told me all that would happen two weeks ago when I decided to again embrace unconditional love as the major force in my life I wouldn't believe it. People from my past have reconnected with me, strangers who are rapidly becoming friends have contracted to help me market my website and materials, people who don’t even believe in God are drawing close to Him and a Bible study I just started tripled in size in one week. In addition, sticky relational problems are resolving themselves, writing projects I thought were doomed are resurrecting and people I don’t even know are approaching me at Starbucks and around my pool to ask how to heal their pain. It’s been two of the most remarkable weeks of my life, and I feel like it’s only just begun.  Look, we all know how important love is. When anyone first connects with God they are awed by His love. But the bloom fades, complications set in, people we trust hurt us and we withdraw from living a radical lifestyle of love. At least that’s what I did. Can you relate?

But we withdraw to our own detriment. It’s like something a man said recently: bitterness is swallowing poison and waiting for the other person to die! Withholding love is similar. We hold back and wonder why people avoid us! We stop loving and can’t figure out why our life is going south in a hurry. We harbor anger, malice and resentment and suddenly discover even we can’t stand our own inner stench.

Real spiritual growth reconnects us with love, both God’s love and the love of others. You can’t have one without the other. If you try to love God while not loving people the flow stops. If you try and love people without loving God first you will soon run out of love.

Healing isn’t an end in itself. It helps us resolve the pain that sends us ‘looking for love in all the wrong places.’ It also removes the barriers that keep us from experiencing and sharing God’s love. God’s love is truly like the miracle of the loaves and fishes: you don’t have enough until you give it away. But many – no, MOST of us – are too wounded to risk loving. That is precisely why Jesus’ name Christ - our Messiah, the Anointed One - is directly related to healing the broken hearted and setting the captives free. When you try to love with a broken heart you may as well try to run with a broken foot.

The entire universe operates on the law of love. The whole world needs love desperately, but unless God’s people give it away, the people around us will search in vain for it in destructive places. The key to changing our world is simple: we must commit to a lifetime of learning how to love as God does. May I repeat William Barclay’s wonderful definition of eternal life? It’s ‘living the life that God lives’. Since our Heavenly Father is love, our greatest need is to learn to love like Him. Only then can we be true to our greatest self.

We often forget how living love blesses us. Think of the parables Jesus taught. The kingdom of God is a buried treasure so valuable that a man sells everything he owns to buy the field in which it is buried. It’s a pearl so precious that we will sacrific everything we are and have to own it. This isn’t talking about Heaven. These are very real benefits in this life; the very essence of the abundant life Jesus came to give us. All the laws and resulting benefits of God’s Kingdom are summed up in the laws of love for truly we reap what we sow. If we would reap love, we must plant its seeds in our daily life.

This is exactly what I am experiencing. It’s the joy of the Lord that comes when we delight in Him; the restoration of our first love; the reason why we follow He who alone is Love in the first place. It’s like the romance of falling in love coupled with the reality of knowing we are loved, 'just as we are, without one plea'. And we are loved that way by Someone who knows all there is to know about us and who still thinks we’re fabulous.

This Eternal Love never ever changes. God’s love lasts forever. But it changes us eternally, for the better. Like some spiritual Energizer Bunny, God’s love keeps on giving, and giving and giving. And to get it, all you have to do is give it away as freely as it is given to you.
